Cyber Security

Can your current IT Security handle a Cyber Attack?

Before you answer that question, let’s consider just a few things about cyber security threats and prevention.

Cyber threats and attacks have the power to change major election results, cripple businesses large and small and worse. The impact that cyber threats and attacks have on our lives cannot be underestimated. In fact, billionaire investor Warren Buffett names cyber threats as mankind’s biggest threat; bigger even than the threat of nuclear weapons.
The truth is that we live in a digital world where cyber security and threats continue to become even more disruptive as time goes on.

Less than 15% of businesses are prepared for a Cyber Attack

Most people believe that these attacks affect only a small number of companies, and especially not those companies with massive IT Security budgets. But think again.

In 2017, there were over 1 million malware attacks in the Americas. Over 50% of data breach victims are small to medium-sized businesses. The average cyber security breach costs $117,000.00 not including downtime and the potential loss of customers once they learn that your systems have been compromised.

Here are a few global companies victimized by Cyber Attacks in 2017:

  • Equifax Data Breach – 145.5 Million Accounts were compromised due to an outdated application framework thereby exposing a security vulnerability which had been overlooked.
  • Uber Data Breach – hackers accessed a server containing personal information for more than 57 million Uber drivers and riders. They demanded a $100,000 ransom to delete their copy of the data, which Uber paid.
  • Yahoo! – 3 Billion personal and business accounts were compromised and are still being affected to this day.
  • Verizon – 14 Million Accounts were discovered unsecured online due to a server misconfiguration by a third-party vendor.
  • InterContinental Hotels Group – 1,200 Locations were compromised resulting from Point-of-sale malware. By all reports, the malware seized customers’ unencrypted credit card data as it passed through servers.

And the list goes on…thing is, most if not all of these attacks were preventable by doing things as simple as implementing updates to newer software programs, installing simple patches etc.

What are the most common threats to cyber security?

Some of the more common cyber security threats include:

  • Botnets
  • Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)
  • Malware
  • Pharming
  • Phishing
  • Ransomware
  • Spoofing
  • Spam
  • Spyware
  • Trojan Horses
  • Viruses
  • Wi-Fi Eaves Dropping
  • Worms
  • WPA2 Handshake Vulnerabilities

How can you improve cyber security?

Although companies are getting wiser, many companies still do not build cyber and privacy risk management into their technologies. This is where vast improvements can be made – building in risk management from the design phase through to production.

In fact, most cyber attackers still rely on human error making it worthwhile to take the time to educate yourself and your company about ways to keep valuable information safe. That said there are a number of key steps you can follow to help keep your business and its data safe.

For instance, it’s important that your staff all know the risks involved with a cyber-attack. This will give them a true understanding of its dire consequences: stolen data, downtime and lost revenue.

And since your company probably has very sensitive data, the best bet is to have your information encrypted, which protects information on your hard drives. Installing antivirus and anti-malware software and firewalls on your company’s computers is also a great way to keep the hackers away.

Updating your operation system, having good intrusion detection tools, backing up your data and making access to restricted information limited to only a few are also strategic methods in combatting the ever growing number of cyber crooks.
